I, Me and Other
Poetry by Gill Schwartz

i am awake

all my dreams have come undone.
i am awake now and know they're
in the hands of that outer me
with its crude and fumbling faults,
its pitiful, disabling vulnerability.
i'll never reach my yearnings
hidden, crippled by its gawky ways
of dealing with the world.
it was always making promises
it never could fulfill.
now, old and useless,
i don't need it.
i'm better off without it.

it's just a diving suit i'm entombed in
to bear me down into the depths of this pit
of fear and confusion. it is absurd!
i refuse to live in its confines any longer.
one way of another, my soul, this real "Me"
that is now awake and knowing,
will somehow find a way to free me
from the bondage of this stifling form.

when, at last, i am released
into the liberty that death holds,
i will soar beyond this pit
to where there is real life to live,
to fully be what my soul yearns to be;
blissfully absorbed in solitary self-birthing.
